WALA: Measurement

To compare objects according to size, length and weight
To use non standard units to measure objects.
To use units of measurement cm, m to measure lengths.

In Room 9 we used cubes as our non standard unit to measure lots of different objects around the classroom. The learners worked with a buddy and showed great team work exploring things around the room and using the blocks to work out how long or tall they were,

This term the Te Pihinga team will be inquiring into the big question

We will be focusing on Animals and learning about them the deeper understandings we want our learners to think about is to

Understand that all living things have certain requirements to stay alive.This is important because we need to know how to nurture God’s creations.
Understand that all animals (including humans) belong to a group (classification) and that any one group of living things share a number of features.This is important because we need to increase our knowledge about the world around us.

Turning In
To get our learners excited about Animals we have linked this with our Arts program and have had so much fun drawing, painting and creating art works about Animals we like.This along with reading and sharing our ideas about what we know and want to know has given us a great start to begin our inquiry.

In Team 10 we have been focussing on developing ourselves as writers! Some of us use stunning beginnings to make our stories interesting. Some of us have been learning to write the sounds we hear in words and some of us have been developing the way we write sentences.
Below are two of our amazing learners - we are so proud!

Religious Education

Today we had Emily’s nana – Sue Higgins come and talk to us about all the different jobs that get done at church. We found out that Mrs Higgins loves to help the church by doing lots of different jobs. Here are some of the jobs that get done:
Sorting and arranging flower - she works in a team and they do this together

Visiting the sick and giving them communion – they are too sick to come to church

Junior Liturgy – reading and telling the children all about Jesus

Landforms - Inquiry

During inquiry we have been learning about the different types of land-forms. We know that land forms are God Made or Man Made. We got into small groups and sorted a range of structures into God Made and Man Made. We then shared our learning with the class. Ask us about our learning

Te Manawa Visit Room 9

All the Te Pihinga Team went along to Te Manawa to learn more about our nearest Landform the Manawatu River and the surrounding area. This was to help us sort out our ideas about Why our Earth looks like this?

We had so much fun with the learning we did with Ann and Matt. A big thank you to all the parents who could make the trip.

Book Week Poems

Kiwa and Fergus came in to Room 9 to read a story and some poems. They are very confident readers and great storytellers.

Volcano Eruption

Once we had made and cooked our volcano we got to paint it so it looked real. We then got to do a science experiment and make lava. We mixed warm water, food colouring, baking soda and vinegar together. We made the volcano erupt! We were so excited. We have learnt lots about volcano, just ask us!
